Interstate 90 in Massachusetts

These photos were taken during the 2004 Thanksgiving weekend, along I-90/Massachusetts Turnpike (abbreviated MassPike) between the New York line and I-91 at West Springfield.  All photos were taken by the webmaster.

I-90/I-91/US 5 Connection

The I-90/I-91/US 5 connection in West Springfield is an interesting junction utilizing four trumpet interchanges, one at each route plus a fourth trumpet tying the three connector legs together.  This aerial image shows the four trumpets and the connector.  I-90 runs east-west along the bottom, I-91 runs north-south along the left side, and US 5 runs north-south along the west side of the Connecticut River.  Photo from Google Earth.

This photo is looking north at the center trumpet, just after going through the tollbooth.  Photo taken November 25, 2004.
Westbound heading towards I-91.  Although the connector is wide enough for 2 lanes, there is no pavement marking for such.  Photo taken November 25, 2004.
The split onto each direction of I-91.  Photo taken November 25, 2004.
Looking east at the center trumpet, where traffic from I-91 can exit towards I-90 or continue straight to US 5.  Photo taken November 26, 2004.
