Former U.S. Highway 16

SD/MN State Line west of Beaver Creek, MN MN/WI State Line at La Crescent, MN

An "original U.S. highway", US 16 ran across the southern tier of counties in Minnesota, connecting Sioux Falls, SD and points west with Worthington, Fairmont, Albert Lea, and Austin, and extending to La Crosse, WI and points east.  Eventually supplanted by construction of I-90, the U.S. highway was decommissioned in Minnesota in 1979.  The portion from Dexter to La Crescent remains on the trunk highway system as MN 16, while an even older section exists in the form of MN 80, bypassed in the early 1950s.

Former US 16 crossed into South Dakota just northeast of Valley Springs, SD (visible in the background).  The former route is now known as CSAH 4 in Rock County, which one is leaving in this photograph.  Photo by Monte Castleman, taken in 2003.

A relatively new "state departure sign", asking drivers to "Come Again" to Minnesota.  This sign and the nearby curve sign are posted just before the location of the above photograph.  Photo by Monte Castleman, taken in 2003.

US 16 used to multiplex with US 14 and US 61 across the Mississippi River between La Crosse and La Crescent.  This is where US 14/US 61 crosses the state line.  Photo by Monte Castleman.
