Originally part of MN 4, this road was first turned back in the 1940s when the existing section of MN 4/55 southwest of Paynesville was built. MN 4 breifly reappeared around 1960, but was replaced by MN 124 by 1963. MnDOT turned the road back in 2003, and as of April was in the process of reconstructing the roadway as part of the turnback.
