(W) II with US 72 at MS border W of Margerum |
(NE) I with US 72/TN 28 at TN border N of Bridgeport |
COLBERT, LAUDERDALE, LIMESTONE, MADISON, JACKSON |
Northern E/W route, hidden almost completely under US 72. The original exit signs on I-65 list AL 2 along with 72. |
4 |
(W) II with US 78 freeway at MS border W of Bexar |
(E) I with US 78/GA 8 at GA border E of Muscadine |
MARION, WALKER, JEFFERSON, ST CLAIR, TALLADEGA, CALHOUN, CLEBURNE |
Currently, the lowest AL route number you can see on a sign. Temporarily marked on the non-continuous portions of the new US 78 freeway alignment. When done, AL 4 will revert to the realm of the hidden. |
6 |
(W) II with US 82 freeway at MS border W of Ethelsville |
(E) II with US 82/GA 27/50 causeway on Chattahoochee bridge at GA border in Eufaula |
PICKENS, TUSCALOOSA, BIBB, CHILTON, AUTAUGA, M'TGY, BULLOCK, BARBOUR |
Gently sloped diagonal route from W at the North Central to E in the South, under US 82. In 1999, this route was signed along the connection between US 31/82 and I-65 near Prattville. The rest of the route is unsigned. |
(8) |
(W) I-20/59 Exit 1 W of Cuba |
(E) II with US 80/GA 22 freeway on Chattahoochee bridge at GA border in Phenix City |
SUMTER, HALE, MARENGO, PERRY, DALLAS, LOWNDES, M'TGY, MACON, LEE, RUSSELL |
Central E/W route, hidden completely under US 80, and unmarked from I-20/59 to US 80. |
10 |
(W) I with MS 19 at MS border W of Yantley |
(E) I with GA 37 at GA border E of Abbeville |
CHOCTAW, MARENGO, WILCOX, BUTLER, CRENSHAW, PIKE, BARBOUR, HENRY |
Normally the lowest marked even AL route number. An ancient cross-state route. See also AL 162 and 164. Duplicates I-10, but the AL designation for the interstates makes that one AL 610. Still, it would be good to combine with GA and MS and renumber this something that would fit in the GA developmental system, such as 510. |

(12) |
(W) I with US 84 at MS border W of Isney |
(E) II with US 84/GA 38 on Chattahoochee Bridge at GA border S of Gordon. |
CHOCTAW, CLARKE, MONROE, CONECUH, COVINGTON, COFFEE, Enterprise, DALE, Daleville, HOUSTON, Dothan |
Recently returned to the realm of the unmarked numbers, hidden almost completely under US 84. |
14 |
(W) I with MS 69 at MS border N of Pickensville. MS 69 continues on to Columbus MS. |
(E) T with US 29/AL 15/147 in Auburn. (urE) I-85 Exit 64 and T with old AL 15. |
PICKENS, GREENE, HALE, PERRY, DALLAS, AUTAUGA, ELMORE, TALLAPOOSA, MACON, LEE |
North of Central E/W route. 14 once ran as the hidden route under US 29 from Auburn to E of Opelika. AL 15 branched off 29 S of Auburn along the original 2 lanes of I-85 that bypassed Auburn and Opelika. Can't help but notice how AL 14 ought to turn S at Aliceville with AL 17 and run across AL 32 to meet MS 14. |
(16) |
(W) II with US 90 at MS border W of Grand Bay |
(E) I with US 90/FL 10 on Perdido River Bridge at FL border E of Seminole |
MOBILE, BALDWIN |
Coastal E/W route, hidden completely under US 90. |
18 |
(W) I with MS 12 at MS border E of Vernon, continues to Columbus MS |
(E) T with AL 69 S of Oakman |
LAMAR, FAYETTE, WALKER |
E/W route in W north central |
20 |
(NW) I with TN 69 at TN border NW of Natchez Trace Pkwy |
(E) Y with US 72/AL 2 as it ends in Huntsville along with multiplexed I-565 and US 72A |
LAUDERDALE, COLBERT, LAWRENCE, MORGAN, LIMESTONE, MADISON, Huntsville. |
Secondary E/W route to AL 2. An ancient cross-state route. Duplicates I-20, but the AL designation for interstates makes that one AL 620. Still, it would be good to renumber the hidden part as its US number, and the marked part as something combined with TN. |

|
22 |
(W) T with AL 5 in Safford |
(E) I with GA 34 at GA border E of Rock Mills |
DALLAS, CHILTON, COOSA, TALLAPOOSA, RANDOLPH |
Secondary E/W route to AL 14. |
24 |
(W) I with MS 23 (and MS 76 under construction) at MS border SW of Red Bay |
(E) T with US 31/AL 3 in Decatur |
FRANKLIN, LAWRENCE, MORGAN |
Secondary E/W route to AL 20. There are proposals to christen this route US 76. The route has only one proposed path from Decatur W on 24 and then W on MS 76 then 6 to Oxford and I-55. E from Decatur could go a number of ways. Suggest E on 67, and 69 to Arab, to Guntersville, along 227 and CR 67, AL 40, AL 75 to GA, along US 11 thru N GA to current W JCT of 76 at 27. This route if improved would provide shoreline access on the S of the Tennessee River. |
26 |
(W) Y with AL 51 in Hurtsboro (urW) Y with US 82/AL 6 E of Union Spgs |
(E) Dangerous T with US 431/AL 1 in Seale |
BULLOCK , RUSSELL |
Part of old 3-Notch Route that followed US 29 from FL to Union Spgs, US 82 E from there, and along current AL 51 to AL 26 and on to Columbus. AL 51 took over the W part of the route when it was extended northward from Midway and onto old AL 37 from Hurtsboro to Opelika. |
28 |
(W) T with AL 17 |
(E) Y with AL 21 just S of AL 89 T with AL 21 |
SUMTER, Livingston, MARENGO, WILCOX, Camden |
Minor E/W route in W S Central Alabama. |
30 |
(W) T with AL 51 in Clayton (urW) T with US 29/AL 15 in Monticello |
(E) T with US 431/AL 1 in Eufaula |
BARBOUR |
(20 mi) Nominally a short route, but an important one connecting the populous Eufaula (people have second houses on Lake Eufaula, y'all know) with its county's seat of Clayton. Route used to continue west along with 51 to Louisville ("also serving Texasville") and then on what now is 130. Credit goes to whoever chose 130, a good 3d(SR) spur of 30. |
32 |
(W) I with MS 14 at MS border |
(E) T with AL 17 S of Cochrane |
PICKENS |
(3 mi) waste of a low 2dSR. Can't help but notice how AL 14 ought to turn S at Aliceville with AL 17 and run across AL 32 to meet MS 14. Probably the shortest low-even route. |
34 |
(W) T with US 231/AL 53 S of Pell City |
(E) T with AL 77 N of Talladega |
ST CLAIR, TALLADEGA |
(12 mi) Short, but Talladega to Pell City is well-travelled. |
36 |
(W) T with AL 33 S of Moulton |
(E) T with US 231/AL 53 S of Tennessee River Bridge |
LAWRENCE, MORGAN, Hartselle |
Minor route, but the Tennessee Valley is growing rapidly, and this route is an important S-side route. |
(38) |
(W) I-20/59 Exit 125 |
(E) II with US 280/GA 520 on Chattahoochee River Bridge at GA border in Columbus/Phenix City |
JEFFERSON, SHELBY, TALLADEGA, COOSA, TALLAPOOSA, CHAMBERS, LEE, Auburn, Opelika, RUSSELL |
Hidden completely under US 280. Originally 38 and US 280 ended in the W at the T with US 31, then were extended in the late 80s along the Elton Stephens (Red Mtn) Expwy. The original S end was at the T with US 29, however with US 80/AL 8 being moved to the N Bypass, there was a need for an index number for the short 1 mile limited access stretch E from US 431 over the river. Also, with Opelika's E bypass for US 431/AL 1 done, that segment needed a number too. AL 38 now serves it all. |
40 |
(W) T with AL 35 at S shore of Lake Guntersville |
(E) T with AL 117 just N of I-59 exit 231 N of Hammondville. |
DE KALB |
(21 mi) Tourist traffic connector from I-59 and the Mentone/Cloudmont area to Scottsboro and on west to Huntsville. Suggest marking this route along with AL 35 over the river and E in place of 117 to the GA border. |
(42) |
(W) I with US 98 at MS border W of Wilmer |
(E) I with US 98/FL 30 on Perdido River Bridge at FL border |
MOBILE, BALDWIN |
Coastal diagonal route, hidden almost completely under US 98. |
44 |
(W) T with US 43/78/AL 118/171 in Guin |
(E) T with AL 129 in Brilliant |
MARION |
(10 mi) Probably the penultimately shortest low-even route. |
46 |
(W) T with US 78/AL 4 in Heflin |
(E) I with GA 166 at GA border E of Ranburne |
CLEBURNE |
(20 mi) Once was marked US 78A long ago. Continued along 166 into Atlanta |
48 |
(W) T with AL 9 in Lineville |
(E) I with GA 5 at GA border E of Graham |
CLAY, RANDOLPH |
(36 mi) GA 5 continues on to become very important near Atlanta. Note how AL 148 is to 48 as AL 130 is to 30. Maybe one could extend 48 W along AL 9 for 14 miles and then with 148 to Sylacauga. |
50 |
(W) T with AL 229 in Red Hill |
(E) T with US 29/AL 15 in Lanett Valley |
ELMORE, TALLAPOOSA, CHAMBERS |
Newest extreme W portion is marked with mile markers that run from the 490's to 500 (Alabama's standard way of marking "negative" miles). |
52 |
(W) T with US 331 in Opp. |
(E) I with GA 62 at GA border near Columbia, continuing on to Albany GA. |
MOBILE, BALDWIN, ESCAMBIA , COVINGTON COFFEE, GENEVA, HOUSTON |
This route once was 84's hidden number, and 12 covered the southern route followed by 52, and then along 29's 15 and 31's 3 to Mobile. Renumber the important Dothan-Albany route something like US 184 (even along GA 300 to I-75?). Failing that, renumber current AL 62 as a continuation of AL 144, and then number ONLY the E of Dothan part as AL 62 which would then run north around the bypass to end at the W bypass intersection of US 84. |
54 |
(W) T with US 331/AL 9 in Florala at FL border |
(E) Y with AL 5 W of Samson. |
COVINGTON, GENEVA |
(17 mi) Extreme southern E/W route, final mile runs along border in Florala (FLORida + ALAbama). |
56 |
(W) I with MS 42 at MS border at US 45 crossroads |
(E) T with US 43/AL (5)/13 at Wagarville |
WASHINGTON |
(29 mi) The one-time route of US 86, until the Alabama River bridge was built for US 84 W of Monroeville. When the Tombigbee bridge was built for US 84 at Coffeeville, 84 moved north, and 56 was marked. |
58 |
(W) T with AL 25 in Centreville |
(E) Y with US 82/AL 6 E of Centreville |
BIBB |
Short short segment of old US 82 in town. Status uncertain, this route seems to come and go. (searching for my notes on this route) |
60 |
(S/W) T with AL 14 in Wedgworth |
(N/E) Y with AL 69 N of Havana |
HALE |
(12 mi) This route is really a N/S route. Given that AL has way more of them than E/W, this one can slide. J |
62 |
(W) T with AL 77. Continues W as AL 144 to US 231 |
(E) T with US 431/AL 1 |
ST CLAIR, CALHOUN |
Mideastern part of the 174/144/62/204 corridor. Suggest renumbering at least 62 to 144, and using the 62 marking on 52 east of Dothan to connect with GA 62. |
64 |
(W) T with US 43/AL (5)/13 |
(E) T with AL 207 just S of TN border |
LAUDERDALE |
Northernmost E/W route, with 2, 20 and 72 being disqualified for running diagonally. |
66 |
(W) T with AL 28 in Consul |
(E) T with AL 5 in Safford |
MARENGO, DALLAS |
It's hard to say you can get your kicks on this route. Suggest renumbering 22 from Safford to Selma as 66. 22 from Selma to Clanton can be 41 or 145, with the rest as US 378, freeing 22 for I-22. |
68 |
(W) Y with AL 75 NE of Albertville |
(E) I at GA border with GA 114 which continues on to Summerville meeting US 27 |
MARSHALL, DE KALB, CHEROKEE |
The eastern portion is well traveled. A triple multiplex W of Centre, with US 411/AL 25. Has a 3d(SR) spur in AL 168. Neat, except the numbers should have been the other way. 68 is more of a spur of itself after 168 begins. |
70 |
(W) T with US 31/AL 3 just north of I-65 exit 231 |
(E) T with AL 25 in Columbiana |
SHELBY |
Shelby County by growing like crazy has made this route useful. |
US 72 |
(W) II with US 72 at MS border W of Margerum |
(NE) I with US 72/TN 28 at TN border N of Bridgeport |
COLBERT, LAUDERDALE, LIMESTONE, MADISON, JACKSON |
Northern E/W route, follows hidden AL 2. The original exit signs on I-65 list AL 2 along with 72. |
US 72A |
(W) T with US 43/72 S of Quad Cities |
(E) Y with US 72/AL 2 as it ends in Huntsville along with multiplexed I-565 and AL 20 |
COLBERT, LAWRENCE, MORGAN, LIMESTONE, MADISON, Huntsville. |
Secondary E/W route to US 72. Alabama has waffled on eliminating the 72A and just going with AL 20 and I-565. |
74 |
(W) Interchange with US 78 W of Hamilton. |
(E) I with GA 6/US 278 at GA border E of Palestine |
MARION, WINSTON, CULLMAN, BLOUNT, ETOWAH, CALHOUN, CHEROKEE, CLEBURNE |
North Central E/W route, mostly hidden under US 278, except for the portion marked W of Hamilton that runs to US 78, a recent addition. That portion was originally US 78. And from Natural Bridge to Hamilton, this was AL 4. |
76 |
(W) Y with AL 25 N of Wilsonville |
(E) T with AL 21 in Winterboro |
SHELBY, TALLADEGA |
A connector with 25 on the west of the Coosa and with 77 on the east. Quintiplexed with US 231/280/AL 38/53 over the Coosa |
US 78 |
(W) II with US 78 freeway at MS border W of Bexar |
(E) I with US 78/GA 8 at GA border E of Muscadine |
MARION, WALKER, JEFFERSON, ST CLAIR, TALLADEGA, CALHOUN, CLEBURNE |
In progress being upgraded to freeway from Memphis to Birmingham. When done, AL 4 will revert to the realm of the hidden. |

(W) T with AL 167 E of Enterprise |
(E) T with US 84/AL 12 N of Wicksburg near AL 123 & US 84 X |
COFFEE, Clayhatchee, HOUSTON |
60's to 80's alignment of US 84. When 84 was rerouted along old AL 92 via Daleville, the portion between AL 123 and AL 167 was shown as AL 12, AL 167 ran to the Enterprise bypass, and AL 88 ran from the bypass to AL 27 in town. 92 was reissued to 12 in 1997. |

(W) T with US 80/AL 8 in Mitylene, E of Montgomery |
(E) T with US 80/AL 8 in Waugh |
MONTGOMERY |
(8 mi) This segment is the northern service road between the Mitylene and Waugh exits on I-85. US 80 serves as the southern service road. Not clear about the date of this segment of 126. I discovered it in the bid for the resurfacing contract. I guess it continues along with US 80 and AL 8 to the Tuskegee segment, but we have no evidence. |

Midwestern part of the 174/144/62/204 corridor. Ended at the Coosa until the new Neely Henry Dam bridge was built. Suggest renumbering at least 62 to 144, and using the 62 marking on 52 east of Dothan to connect with GA 62. |

ALDOT uses these numbers as new E/W routes are created in order. |
202-8 are recent additions to the state route system. 210, 216 and 248 are a bit older. |

(ROTARY) (begins CCW @ 1:00) X with US 431/AL 1 |
HOUSTON, Dothan |
(15 mi) Complete divided 4-lane bypass, begun in 1954! Gave Dothan CB nickname Circle City. Was 1st such bypass of a city. 210 is unmarked-instead US 231 & 84 are marked in both directions making a mess. Would help if NE part between 231 & 84 were marked 210! Number likely assigned same time as 211 in Dothan, for same reasons 215/216 and 248/249 exist. |
