(1) |
At FL border SW of Madrid (MAD-ridd),
duplexed with US 231. |
At TN border N of Hazen Green, multiplexed with
US 231/US 431. |
355.2 |
HOUSTON, Dothan, HENRY, BARBOUR, RUSSELL, LEE, CHAMBERS, RANDOLPH, CLEBURNE, CALHOUN, ETOWAH, MARSHALL, MADISON |
Eastern N/S corridor. Although the lowest route number, it is completely hidden and never appears on a sign! The state's primary numbered route enters with US 231 as it passes thru Dothan, then choosing US 431 all the way to Huntsville where 231 joins again for the trip to Tenn. Originally, it travelled N/S along St Andrews St and Headland Avenue (numbered AL 211 after new Reeves St route was built) into Headland and N on S-bound 173, continuing N on Henry CR 99 to Abbeville. Then left N on current US 431BUS to existing 431. |

(S) T with US 90/98/(AL 16/42) in Spanish Fort |
(N) II with I-65/US 31 at TN border near ArdmoreUS 31 continues on to T with I-75 in Michigan |
MOBILE, BALDWIN, ESCAMBIAˇ |
Central N/S corridor. Although a low route number such as 1 and 2, it is completely hidden today and never appears on a sign! It completely follows US 31. The original route didn't. At Stapleton, 3 continued south to Gulf Shores, and US 31 was accompanied by ur AL 12 to Mobile. |
|
5 |
(S) T with US 43/(AL 13) 2 mi N of Thomasville |
(N) T with US 43/AL (13)/17 near Spruce Pine |
MOBILE, WASHINGTON, CLARKE, |
West of Central N/S corridor. The original quick route from Birmingham to Mobile. AL 5 is the lowest regularly signed route in the state. Of all the single digit routes (1dSR's) only are 5 and 9 have long portions signed, with 4 along for the ride for a few more years. Southernmost portion replaced by AL 163, and later AL 193. Part from Mobile to Thomasville eliminated also. Part from Spruce Pine to TN also eliminated. |
|
(7) |
(S/W) I with US 11/80 at MS border near Cuba |
(N/E) I with US 11/GA 58 at GA border near Mentone Area |
GREENEˇ |
MS to GA SW to NE diagonal. Hidden number for all of US 11. Completely replaced now by I-59 for cross-state traffic. |
|
9 |
(S) I with US 331 at FL border near Florala |
(N/E) I with GA 20 at GA border in Cherokee Co. |
East of Central N/S corridor. Hidden number for US 331. Continues as GA 20 which makes an interesting half-outer loop of Atlanta. Section from Centre to GA is E/W but signed N/S. Route is hidden once it intersects with US 231 near Wetumpka. |
||
11 |
(S) I with FL 97 at FL border S of Atmore |
(N) T with US 31/AL 3 in Montgomery. |
ESCAMBIA, MONROE, WILCOX, LOWNDES, MONTGOMERY |
Replaced by AL 21. Was a secondary SW to NE diagonal from FL thru Montgomery. Renumbered as AL 21 sometime after 1926. |

13 |
(S) T with Government St, Mobile |
(N) I with US 43/TN 6 at TN border near Greenhill |
West N/S corridor. Suggestion: Trade sections from Florence to TN with AL 13, and cease signing of 17 from Hamilton. 13 has to be signed to at least Spruce Pine anyway. Also, the connection with TN 13 provides a long through route |
||
(15) |
(S) II with US 29/FL 95 in Flomaton (Florida-Alabama Town) |
(N/E) II with US 29/GA 14 in downtown Lanett Valley |
Hidden number for US 29. FL to GA S to E diagonal. The idea of an Atlanta to Pensacola direct route is nice, but I-85/65, AL 113 is the sane route to take.. |
||
17 |
(S) II with Government St, Mobile |
(N) I with TN 13 in Lauderdale Co |
LAUDERDALE |
Extreme West N/S corridor. Unsigned from Mobile to Y cut off from US 45. Suggestion: Trade sections from Florence to TN with AL 13, and cease signing of 17 from Hamilton. 13 has to be signed to at least Spruce Pine anyway. Also, the connection with TN 13 provides a long through route. |
|
19 |
(S) Y with AL 17 in Detroit (AL, not MI) |
(N) T with AL 24 in Red Bay |
LAMAR, MARION, FRANKLIN |
(~30 miles) Spur route in extreme W of AL 17. One must actually turn right to stay on AL 17. No intersection with the new US 78/"I-22", one must use the old route, marked AL 74 as of 1998. |
|
21 |
(S) I with FL 97 at FL border S of Atmore |
(N) T with AL 9 in Piedmont |
ESCAMBIA, MONROE, WILCOX, LOWNDES, MONTGOMERY, ELMORE, COOSA, TALLADEGA, CALHOUN |
Replaced AL 11 S of Montgomery Was a secondary SW to NE diagonal from Montgomery. Renumbered all as AL 21 sometime after 1926. |
|
23 |
(S/W) T with US 11/AL 7 in Springville |
(N/E) X with US 231 and 411 in Ashville |
Spur route in N Central of AL 7. Although considered a N/S route because of terrain and connecting 11 and 411, the route is more E/W |
||
25 |
(S) T with AL 5 near Sunny South in West Wilcox Co |
(N/E) I with US 411 in Cherokee Co |
Near MS to GA S to E diagonal. Route stands alone from its beginning to Leeds, and then is hidden under US 411 to the GA line. All in all a strange route. S of Centreville, it doesn't carry a lot of traffic, but between there and Harpersville it does. |
||
27 |

(S) T with US 278/AL 4 in Double Springs |
(N) T with US 72A/AL 20 E of Courtland |
WINSTON, LAWRENCE |
N/S route in W Tenn Valley. A logical extension of 33 to the S would take over AL 195 from Dbl Spgs to Jasper, and AL 269 from Jasper to Birmingham. A bridge across the Tennessee to provide southerly access to Joe Wheeler Park and to assume the route of AL 207 is very speculative. |
|
35 |
(S/E) T with AL 9 near Cedar Bluff |
(W) T with new US 72/AL 2 near Woodville |
CHEROKEE, DEKALB, JACKSON, Scottsboro |
Only odd route marked with an E/W section (Old US 72 in Jackson). Originally, the route ended in Scottsboro. Since AL 40 (a more logical number for the old 72) wasn't signed over the TN river bridge, 35 was used, very illogically, except for the fact that the mileposts for 40 would have had to been redone, or use the Mile 500 system. |
|
37 (ur) |
(S) T with AL 26 in Hurtsboro. |
(N) T with US 280/431/AL 1 in Opelika |
RUSSELL, LEE, CHAMBERS, RANDOLPH, CLEBURNE, CALHOUN |
Until the late 80's the modern route was from Hurtsboro to Opelika alone. Back in the days of US 241, 37 took the modern path of 431 north from Opelika. This 37 was renumbered as a N extension of 51. |
|
37 (2) |
(S) T with AL 59 in Chrysler |
(S) T with US 84 in Perdue Hill |
MONROE |
This number shortly appeared in place of Monroe CR 1 for reasons unknown, and then disappeared again. It would have made more sense to extend AL 47 over this really. |

(N) T with AL 9 in Lineville |
MACON, TALLAPOOSA, Dadeville, New Site, CLAY, Lineville, CLEBURNE, Heflin |
The section from I-85 to AL 14 is a newer section added later as a travel route to the east shore of Lake Martin. Unlike additions normally numbered with Mile 500 = Mile 0, with numbers decreasing from that point, this one begins at 500 and goes up! So much for the system! The part of 49 N of Lineville was renumbered 281 recently to identify it as the Cheaha Park Road. |

Oddly numbered (pun intended) cross state route. I would love to find out before I die why such a major route, as vital as AL 1, 3 and 5 is numbered 53. Possibly an x3 numbering? A 2di route paralleling a 1digit route? |

(S) I with FL 271 at FL border near Chattahoochee St Pk |
(N) T with US 431(AL 1) S of Eufaula |
HOUSTON, Gordon, Columbia, HENRY, Abbeville, BARBOUR |
A Chattahoochee River Road along its west bank. OK, you actually follow Henry CR 97 part of the way. A scenic route which has been extended in each direction. Since the original 0 Milepost is just S of modern US 84, it became Mile 500. Go a mile S and see Mile 499, etc, right down to near 489 at the border. The state should continue 95 N along 431 to Lakepoint where 95 could take over AL 165 to Phenix City (freeing that to index I-165). A further extension up Lee and Chambers CR 379 and on to a T with US 431 at Five Points would be good. |

(13 mi) Oldest route of US 231 from Dothan S to the FL border. Eliminated just before 1973. Became Houston CR 115, until E-911 when Route 203 (as it was still called) returned. Route is near the original 211, and has a kinship with 205. |

(Eventual ROTARY) |
(N) T with AL 125 N of Elba |
COFFEE |
A recent addition, road provides important access to often flooded roads in Elba on the Pea River. When complete to the E side, 84 and 87 might replace 203. 203 is an strange choice of number, as one would think ALDOT should avoid needing to get into 3XX state routes. Rotaries REALLY should get evens in Alabama, all things considered. |

A recent addition. 211 is an excellent choice of number, as it is a logical loop-to-US 431-from-US-11 route. Takes over the state-standard S-most section of the AL 227 route that hadn't been signed awaiting the completion of 227 to Gadsden. |

(N) GATE at Ft Rucker |
Ft Rucker, DALE, Ozark |
Akin to AL 248, an unusual choice for an even route. As 248 serves Enterprise traffic to Ft Rucker, 249 does the same for folks from Ozark. |

MONTGOMERY |
Originally also US 331BUS, this was the part of Norman Bridge Rd bypassed by the S Court Street extension. When the eponymous bridge was damaged, this section was taken off the rolls. In some years, the maps indicated 227, which was a uncaught typo. |

(S) T with US 31(AL 3) in Bay Minnette |
(N) I-65 Exit 37 |
BALDWIN, Bay Minnette |
New for 1987, this route upgraded a heavily traveled CR from I-65 exit 37 into Bay Minette. Strangely, AL 59 takes the bypass route. In other words, as you travel S, stay on the road, it becomes South 59. The road to your right, North 59, becomes South 287 to your left. Nuts! |

Alabama's only loop freeway, and only half a loop at that. (This excludes the portion of I-65 that bypasses Mobile.) |
