North Metro (outside
the Beltway)
This page covers I-35E from
the eastern I-35E/I-694 interchange in Vadnais Heights to the I-35W/I-35E
split in rural Anoka County. Total length of this section
is approximately 13.3 miles.
Description
This generally rural
portion of I-35E, through northeastern Ramsey County and eastern
Anoka County, is the primary gateway for traffic entering the
eastern Twin Cities metro from northeastern Minnesota. As with its I-35W
counterpart to the west, this segment of I-35E is not only a busy commuter
route, but is a heavily used recreational route during summer weekends.

Speed Limit
- 60 MPH south of County Road E
- 70 MPH north of County Road E
History
- Opened between I-694 and the 35W/35E merge in 1970.
Future Plans
- The portion from I-694 up to County Road E will be reconstructed as part
of the now-underway I-35E/I-694 "Unweave the Weave" project.
- In the early 2000s, MnDOT completed a corridor management plan for this segment of
I-35E. The plan recommendations are for expansion to 8 lanes between
I-694 and CSAH 96, expansion to 6 lanes between CSAH 96 and CSAH 14,
interchange improvements at CSAH 96 and CSAH 14, a full interchange at
County Road J, and a new interchange in the vicinity of CR 140 (as part of a
new east-west arterial tying into CSAH 14 towards Blaine).
- An earlier access study in the White Bear area recommended a new
interchange at either Hammond Rd or at County Road H-2. This
recommendation was not reflected in the corridor management plan, but might
be pursued by White Bear Lake as a local access project.
Froggie Suggests
- Widen I-35E to 8 lanes from I-694 to Ramsey CSAH 96.
- Reconstruct the interchange at CSAH 96 into a SPUI.
- Widen I-35E to 6 lanes from CSAH 96 to I-35/I-35W.
- Add a new interchange at County Road H2.
- Add ramps to/from the north to complete a full
interchange at County Road J.
- Interchange improvements at Anoka CSAH 14.
- Add a new interchange at Anoka CR 140/80th St.
