This page covers I-694 from its western interchange with I-35E to I-94/I-494 in Oakdale. This includes a roughly 0.7 mile duplex with I-35E. Total length of this section is approximately 11.7 miles.

Description

This is the least used segment of the I-494/I-694 Beltway, yet still sees some traffic. It primarily serves commercial and some industrial area in Maplewood, White Bear Lake, and Oakdale, although there is still a fair amount of undeveloped land nearby. Maplewood Mall is located just south of I-694 at the White Bear Ave exit.

History

Constructed between I-94/494 and MN 36 in 1969.
Completed out to I-35E (including the 35E/694 commons) in 1970.
US 61 interchange reconstructed ca. 1979.

Future Plans

A long-range goal of MnDOT and the state is to provide a full 6-lane beltway around the Twin Cities. The segment from I-35E to MN 36 has funding identified in the 2024-2030 timeframe.

Froggie Suggests

Expedite the "Unweave the Weave" project at I-35E.
Widen I-694 to 6 lanes between I-35E and I-94/494.
Reconstruct the US 61, White Bear Ave, MN 120, and MN 5 interchanges into SPUIs or partial cloverleaf interchanges.
Reconstruct the MN 36 interchange to include C/D roads and an EB 694 to EB 36 flyover.
Reconstruct the I-94/494 interchange to include C/D roads, a SB 694 to EB 94 flyover, and a WB 94 to SB 494 flyover.
