Overview:
Unlike most medium mechs, which tend to serve as the primary combatants in a battle, the Engager performs a function often overlooked; that of a first-contact unit. Although such duties often fall on lighter mechs, the Engager may replace them, being built for such a role.
Capabilities:
The Engager is designed to locate an enemy, strike from a distance, and then withdraw as heavier mechs take the field. Though it has near-maximum armor for its size, the ENG-4R is not armored enough for elongated exchanges of fire with opponents, especially heavier opponents. As such, the ENG-4R is equipped to attack approaching foes before they can get close enough to return fire.
A pair of class-2 Ultra Autocannons are the mech's main weapons. With its impressive range and ammo capacity, the Ultra AC/2 is perfect for chipping away at a distant enemy, whether at single or double rate. The Engager also mounts a pair of Sutel Line ER Medium Lasers, which provide crucial backup if an oncoming attacker closes too quickly for the mech to retreat.
The Engager's speed is marginal, but the mech's jump jets
allow it to cover ground more quickly in order to bring a target
within range of its autocannons. In addition, the weapons are so
heat-efficient that the ten double heat sinks installed will keep
the mech cool-running even if hit by infernos.
Deployment:
Most Engagers in use can be found in garrison forces, often being deployed to drive off raiders or take out hostile aircraft. At the same time, the Engager is quite popular in raiding parties, in which it often spearheads strikes into enemy territory. However, due to its rather lackluster role, many Mechwarriors view commanding an Engager as little more than a chore.
Variants:
An experimental model, designated the ENG-5X and loosely based on the original prototype, mounts an Extra-light engine, allowing the ENG-5X to sprint at close to 100kph. Though this model does not have Jump Jets, it does incorporate an experimental Light ECM Suite, giving the mech protection equivalent to the Guardian ECM Suite with less mass and cost.
