Overview:
The Firefox, named for a fictional conventional fighter from 20th Century Terra, is a relatively new mech in the Clan Occupation Zone. First spotted in Clan Wolf territory, it was first mistaken for a Koshi, as the two designs look almost identical. Only after the capabilities of the mech were demonstrated was it discovered that the Firefox was a new design.
The Firefox is reminiscent of the Icestorm, a mech that the Koshi itself was designed from, having the same speed as that ancient Ice Hellion mech. Although the advent of omnimechs had relegated the Icestorm to secondary status, there were those among the Clans who saw the value of having a reconfigurable mech with such speed. Clan Diamond Shark, eager to capitalize, was the first to the drawing board with the design for the Firefox.
Capabilities:
Like its namesake, the Firefox has speed unmatched in any other mech. A 300 extra-light engine, usually reserved for heavy and assault mechs, is what gives the Firefox its speed and power. Coupled with this is Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry, which enables short bursts of speed in excess of 250 kph, unheard of in a mech. Just over four tons of ferro-fibrous armor gives decent protection for a light mech.
One concern is the paucity of pod space available to the mech. Speed and armor protection took higher precedence during design, leaving the Firefox with only 3 tons of pod space. Clan technicians use this pod space to the best extent possible in the various configurations, aided in part by the superiority of Clan technology.
The Primary configuration is by far the most popular, as its three extended-range medium lasers can put a good dent into light mechs and even some mediums. Alternate configuration "C" is useful if infantry is the predicted opposition, while configuration "F" is purely a reconnaissance vehicle.
Deployment:
Very suitable to hit-and-run raids, the Firefox has found its best homes among those Clans who value highly mobile warfare, primarily Clans Wolf and Hell's Horses. Although it is a rare mech, all of the Invading Clans have a few, except the Smoke Jaguars, who disdain "a mech that has nothing but flyswatters for weaponry". A few have been captured by Inner Sphere forces, though the only units known to actually use the captured machines are the Davion Light Guards and Burger's Renegades.
