Overview:
The Thor ST is a two-sided effort to emulate the venerable Clan Thor (Summoner) design. Initially started by Coventry Metal Works in an attempt to build an Omnimech similar to the Black Hawk KU using salvage from the Coventry campaign, the Coventry team suffered several drawbacks, including not being initially able to produce a mech with an XL engine, which was vital for the design to work. Calling in the so-called experts of Inner Sphere Omnimech technology, Coventry worked on the rest of the Thor ST with a team from Luthien Armor Works.
Capabilities:
Although the Thor ST has to make use of inferior Inner Sphere technologies, the design team has been rather successful copying the capabilities of the original Clan design. Two of the more important changes to the design was raising the tonnage to seventy-five tons, and trading the Ferro-Fibrous armor for a more weight-efficient Endo Steel chassis. The Thor ST's armor has been beefed up, making it considerably less fragile than the Clan Thor. However, the Thor ST's XL engine is much more vulnerable to enemy fire and is easily put out of commission. Thankfully, the engineers have also added a CASE system to the Thor ST, protecting its pilot in case of ammunition explosions.
The Thor ST carries a weapons load similar to the Clan Thor, and can actually carry four tons more equipment than the Clan version. The Primary configuration carries an Extended-Range PPC in the right arm like the Clan version, while the left houses a Mydron Excel LB-10X. Learning from the Clans mistake of allocating a single ton of ammunition for the AC, designers made sure the cannon was amply supplied with ammunition. On the Thor ST's left shoulder is a canister mounted LRM-10 rack, which is supplied by a single ton of ammunition.
The Thor ST A carries a massive Gauss Rifle in its left arm, with sixteen rounds of ammo. On the adjacent shoulder is a Holly SRM-6 launcher, similar to the one found on the Warhammer. The right arm houses a single ER Large Laser, making the Thor ST A a vicious long-range fighter.
The least popular of the variants, the Thor ST B serves as a rapid-response fire support mech. Each arm carries a single LRM-15 pack. Since the launcher is smaller than its Clan counterpart, and the Thor ST B lacks the NARC system of the Summoner, designers have augmented the LRMs with Artemis IV FCS systems to increase their accuracy. Replacing the twin SRM-4 packs are twin Streak SRM-2 packs, with are some of the most reliable weapons available on the market. The Thor ST B also lacks the Anti-Missile System of its Clan predecessor, but instead mounts two ER Medium Lasers on the left shoulder, giving the Thor ST B some firepower if the missile systems run out of ammunition.
The Charlie configuration of the Thor ST makes use of the new Defiance Thunder Ultra AC/20. The weapon is carried by the left arm, with the ammunition stored in the Thor ST's left torso. A single ER Large Laser and LRM-5 pack round out the Thor ST C, giving the mech a limited long range punch.
The Thor ST D is very different from the Clan Thor D, thanks to the Lyran's inability to manufacture Targeting Computers. To achieve the accuracy of the Clan Thor D, designers have used multiple pulse lasers as the Delta's main weaponry. Each arm carries a single Large Pulse Laser while a third rounds the design, mounted on the left shoulder. Although this has stripped the Thor ST D of long range weapon systems, the Thor ST's inherent speed and agility can bring the mech to weapons range quite easily.
Battle History:
The Thor ST's battle experience is limited to trial exercises and a few small skirmishes with the Clans. However, given the current state of affairs between the Lyran Alliance and the Federated Suns, along with hostilities brought by the Draconis Combine, the Thor ST should be getting a work out very soon. A side note places several Thor ST's amongst the Kuritan forces that annexed the Lyon's Thumb, meaning engagements between Thor ST's may not be far ahead.
Deployment:
Although the primary manufacturer is Coventry Metal Works, Duke Bradford has authorized Luthien Armor Works to produce the design for the Draconis Combine in moderate numbers. However, Coventry's Thor ST line is nearly twice as big as the Kuritan's, making nearly three times the output of Thor ST's than Luthien Armor Works. This has placed the majority of the Thor ST's in the hands of the Lyrans, who have placed most of them on the Lyran border with the Clans, although some have been assigned to units near the chokepoint of the Terran Corridor, the Lyran Alliance's border with the Federated Suns.
