California State Highway 163

CA 163 is a north-south freeway in the San Diego area, running from I-5 on the north edge of downtown San Diego north to I-15 near Miramar Marine Core Air Station and passing through Balboa Park near its southern end.  A portion of this route was once part of US 395.

The two northbound photos were taken on the short stretch between Clairmont Mesa Blvd and CA 52.  The southbound photos were taken going through Balboa Park towards downtown.  All photos were taken by the webmaster in October, 2007.

The northbound on-ramp from Clairemont Mesa Blvd becomes an exit only lane to eastbound CA 52.
At the exit to CA 52 East.
Overhead signage on southbound CA 163 through Balboa Park, approaching the interchange with I-5 and downtown.  I was surprised with how narrow CA 163 was through Balboa Park.  Given the location and the direct feed into downtown from the north, I was expecting at least 6 lanes, if not 8.
This interesting version of concrete arch bridge carries El Prado (an extension of Laurel St) over CA 163 and part of Balboa Park.
The off-ramp to I-5.  CA 163 continues ahead, ending just south of I-5 at the transition to 10th Ave.
END CA 163 signage at the start of 10th Ave.  10th Ave continues as a one-way southbound street along the east side of downtown, ending near Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres).
