San Diego Photos

This series of photo pages is from my first ever visit to San Diego, while on a temporary duty trip onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), from 21-24 October, 2007.  Whether by fate or by sheer coincidence, the day we pulled into San Diego coincided with the start of the massive wildfires in the southern California area that month, which were aided by major drought conditions and heavy Santa Ana winds.  San Diego County was particularly hit hard, with 4 major fires and several smaller fires burning hundreds of thousands of acres and destroying numerous homes and businesses.  Smoke from the fires spread throughout the area (and a long distance out to sea as well) and was very visible during most of our port visit, including in several of the photos I took (no those aren't clouds in the sky in my photos).

My thoughts and prayers go out to those who lost their homes and businesses to the wildfires.  As one who lost his household goods to Hurricane Katrina, I feel your pain.

NASA has a webpage with some impressive satellite photos of the area during the disaster.

The below photosets show the various places I visited during the port visit:

Coronado Beach

Sunset Cliffs

Point Loma and Cabrillo National Monument

Spanish Landing Park

USS Midway (CV-41)
