South Metro

This page covers MN 62 from the I-494 interchange in Minnetonka to the MN 62/MN 55 intersection near Fort Snelling.  This includes the 1 mile long I-35W/MN 62 "Crosstown Commons".  Total length of this section is approximately 12 miles.

Description

Long known as the "Crosstown", and still called that by many locals, MN 62 was one of the first non-Interstate freeways in the Twin Cities, with much of the construction completed by the late '60s.  Designed and constructed by Hennepin County, the Crosstown was for years one of only two county-maintained freeways in Minnesota, and one of a handful in the country.  While completed through the middle, the endpoints lagged for many years, and was only partially remedied during the 1980s.  The originally proposed extension to the MN 7/then-MN 101 intersection in Minnetonka was cancelled, but the route was completed west from US 169 to I-494 in the mid '80s.  A 20 MPH "s-curve" just west of MN 55 was straightened out around 1990, and the long-awaited interchange at MN 55 is now under construction.

Some of the most chronic congestion in the Twin Cities occurs on the "Crosstown", especially in and around the 35W/62 "Crosstown Commons".  Other parts of the corridor are considerably congested, with many sections having ADT counts of over 90,000.  By comparison, the "average" 4 lane freeway reaches congestion at about 70,000 ADT.
