Route eliminations
Below is a listing of those US
routes which I would eliminate entirely, including a rationale behind each
elimination:
- In keeping with my suggested
policy on eliminating the ALTERNATE banner, the following ALT US 1 segments
would be eliminated. The rationale for eliminating these segments is
because they are not part of NHS and do not serve as a logical U.S. route or NHS
connector:
- Existing ALT US 1 between Van Buren, ME and
Mars Hill, ME becomes ME 10. Existing ME 10 between Presque Isle, ME
and Easton Center, ME becomes an extension of ME 227.
- Existing ALT US 1 between Machias, ME and US
1 near Jonesboro, ME becomes an extension of ME 187.
- Existing ALT US 1 in Rockland, ME is
turned back to the city or reverts to state route designation.
- Existing ALT US 1 in Portland, ME is turned back to
the cities or reverts to state route designation.
- Existing ALT US 1 between Cape Neddick, ME
and York Corner, ME becomes extensions of ME 91 and ME 103.
- Existing ALT US 1 between Attleboro, MA and
Warwick, RI becomes MA/RI 1A.
- Existing ALT US 1 in Stonington, CT is turned
back to the town or reverts to state route designation.
- Existing ALT US 1 between Baltimore, MD and
Halethorpe, MD is turned back to the cities or reverts to state route
designation.
- Existing ALT US 1 between Hyattsville, MD and
Washington, DC is turned back to the cities or reverts to state route
designation.
- Existing ALT US 1 in Franklinton, NC is
turned back to the city/county or reverts to state route designation.
- Existing ALT US 1 between Youngsville, NC and
Wake Forest, NC is turned back to the cities/counties or reverts to state
route designation.
- In keeping with my suggested
policy on eliminating the ALTERNATE banner, the following ALT US 2 segments
would be eliminated. The rationale for eliminating these segments is
because they are not part of NHS and do not serve as a logical U.S. route or NHS
connector:
- Existing ALT US 2 between Orono, ME and Old
Town, ME is turned back to the towns or reverts to state route designation.
- Existing ALT US 2 between Macwahoc, ME and
Houlton, ME becomes part of an extended ME 100.
- This route takes a somewhat
convoluted path from Nortonville, KS to near Oregon, MO. Except possibly
as a route for US 59 traffic to avoid St. Joseph, MO, this route serves no real
purpose, and even this possible purpose is negated by the fact that US 59 is of
secondary importance north of St. Joseph. This route could easily be
eliminated. The segment duplexed with US 73 would revert to just US 73.
The non-duplexed segment in Kansas could become a KS 4 extension, while the non-duplexed
segment in Nebraska could become a NE 8 extension and the Missouri segment
becomes part of MO 48.
