This is my alternative listing for showing minimum crew requirements that include aerospace crew, battlemech and vehicle crew, and medical crew associated with my "Updated Medical Bay" optional component. Ship Type reflects the "base" minimal crew, while Crew Type reflects additional necessary personnel. Personnel may, in this case, may include mechwarriors, aerospace pilots, vehicle crewman, and technicians who are not directly attached to the ship. Their numbers are added and included here in order to plan for and accommodate quarters, food requirements, and life support for these additional "crewmen".
Scroll down to:
Ship Type |
Crew Required |
Dropship/Small Craft (Civilian) | 3 + 1 per 5,000 tons (or fraction thereof) |
Dropship (Military) | 4 + 1 per 5,000 tons (or fraction thereof) |
Jumpship | 6 + 1 per 20,000 tons (or fraction thereof) |
Warship | 45 + 1 per 5,000 tons (or fraction thereof) |
Crew Type |
Crew Required |
Gunners (standard) | 1 per 6 standard weapons (or fraction thereof...includes point-defense weapons) |
Gunners (capital) | 1 per capital weapon (includes missile launchers) |
Medical Crew | 1 per bed (if including my Updated Medical Bay) |
Aircrew | 3 per Small Craft or Heavy Fighter 2 per Medium or Light Fighter |
Ground Crew (mech) | 2 per mech |
Ground Crew (vehicle) | 2 per Very Light Vehicle 3 per Light Vehicle 4 per Medium Vehicle 5 per Heavy Vehicle 7 per Assault Vehicle |
If designing a ship with standard Level 2 components, assume a Heavy Fighter for all Fighter Bays, a Small Craft for all Small Craft bays, a Medium Vehicle for all 50-ton vehicle bays, and an Assault Vehicle for all 100-ton vehicle bays.
As a general rule, I follow a different standard from Battlespace for both ship crewmen and "additional" crewmen, in that 20% are officers (instead of the 1 officer to 5 enlisted that Battlespace recommends). In other words, on a ship with 100 crew, 20 of those crew will be officers (20/100 = 20%). A mech contingent of 30 personnel will have 6 officers (6/30 = 20%). Each may assign quarters as they please. Personally, I assign the 10-ton 1st Class quarters to Officers, and the 7-ton 2nd Class quarters to all other crewmen. As infantry have their own "facilities", I do not include them.
To determine total numbers for Food and Life Support requirements, assume all of the crewmembers above, plus the following:
Type |
Food/Life Support Required |
Universal Bay | 3 per bay |
Elemental Bay | 5 per point |
Infantry/Marine Bay | 28 per point |
Medical Bay | 1 additional per bed (in addition to crew listed above) |
Passengers | 1 per passenger |
Although totaled for food and life support requirements, some designers may use this number to determine the number of escape pods and lifeboats required to abandon all crew, personnel, and passengers.
The following three tables detail examples of my optional crew requirements.
Example #1 is a 10,000 ton military dropship with 30 weapons, 2 fighter bays, 8 mech bays, 12 universal bays, and 10 passenger quarters.
Type |
Food/Life Support Required |
Military dropship | 6 (4 + 10,000 tons/5,000 tons) |
Gunners | 5 (30 weapons/6 weps-per-gunner) |
Fighter bay | 6 (2 bays * 3 per bay) |
Mech Bay | 16 (8 bays * 2 per bay) |
Crew Total | 33 (6 + 5 + 6 + 16) |
Universal Bay | 36 (12 bays * 3 per bay) |
Passengers | 10 (1 per passenger quarter) |
Food/Life Support Total | 79 (33 + 36 + 10) |
Example #2 is a 200,000 ton jumpship with 12 weapons, 2 small craft bays, 2 light fighter bays, 2 marine platoons, a 10-bed medical bay, and 10 passenger quarters.
Type |
Food/Life Support Required |
Jumpship | 16 (6 + 200,000 tons/20,000 tons) |
Gunners | 2 (12 weapons/6 weps-per-gunner) |
Medical Bay | 10 (1 per bed) |
Small Craft Bay | 6 (2 bays * 3 per bay) |
Figher Bay | 4 (2 bays * 2 per bay) |
Crew Total | 38 (16 + 2 + 10 + 6 + 4) |
Marine Platoon | 56 (2 platoons * 28 per platoon) |
Medical Bay | 10 (1 per bay) |
Passengers | 10 (1 per passenger quarter) |
Food/Life Support Total | 114 (38 + 56 + 10 + 10) |
Example #3 is a 500,000 ton warship with 100 standard weapons, 20 capital weapons, 4 small craft bays, 20 fighter bays, 4 Battlearmor points, 3 marine platoons, 12 universal bays, a 20-bed medical bay, and 20 passenger quarters.
Type |
Food/Life Support Required |
Warship | 145 (45 + 500,000 tons/5,000 tons) |
Gunners (standard) | 17 (100 weapons/6 weps-per-gunner, rounded up) |
Gunners (capital) | 20 (1 per capital weapon) |
Medical Bay | 20 (1 per bed) |
Small Craft Bay | 12 (4 bays * 3 per bay) |
Figher Bay | 60 (20 bays * 3 per bay) |
Crew Total | 274 (145 + 17 + 20 + 20 + 12 + 60) |
Universal Bay | 36 (12 bays * 3 per bay) |
Battlearmor Bay | 20 (4 points * 5 per point) |
Marine Platoon | 84 (3 platoons * 28 per platoon) |
Medical Bay | 20 (1 per bay) |
Passengers | 20 (1 per passenger quarter) |
Food/Life Support Total | 454 (274 + 36 + 20 + 84 + 20 + 20) |
