Overview:

By the mid 3050s, enough secrets had been decoded from the Star League Memory Core to where the Great Houses were able to design and build the long lost Warships, including the original Star League Warship designs. Many Warship programs had indeed begun during the early 3050s, although these were all considered new designs. In 3053, the Federated Commonwealth began work on a secret project at the New Syrtis shipyards to construct a vintage and powerful Star League warship design: the Potemkin. The complexity of the design, however, plus the sheer size and the minor design modifications all combined to delay the commissioning of the Federated Commonwealth's first Potemkin until 3063.

Changes in naval philosophy are what brought about the modifications. The original Potemkin, while a solid design, was considerably lacking in firepower in the front and rear arcs, as well as lacking any anti-fighter weaponry besides the Barracuda launchers. Armor coverage was also somewhat lacking for modern-day combat, should the Potemkin come upon another warship. While outmassing and outarmoring most other warships, the Potemkin is also amongst the slowest of all warships, meaning that if caught, it will take damage. Fed-Com engineers attempted to solve these and many other problems, and for the most part were successful, although the changes added just under 100,000 tons of weight and reduced the cargo bay capacity.

The successful launching of the FCS Morgan Hasek-Davion (named in honor of the fallen Task Force Serpent leader) represents the pinnacle of the Federated Commonwealth's warship program. Superficially the same as the Star League-era Potemkin, the Fed-Com Potemkin includes the changes required of modern naval combat. While having the same speed, the Fed-Com version has slightly better capital firepower, and significantly better anti-fighter capability, with the addition of LB-X autocannon, Artemis-equipped LRMs, and Pulse Lasers. Dozens of Small Lasers were also added for point defense. The old Barracuda launchers were replaced by more versatile AR-10 missile launchers, and 4 Screen Launchers were added for additional defense.

Moreso are the other capabilities. Still having the capability of holding 25 dropships, the Fed-Com Potemkin also has fighter bays for carrying 2 wings (36 fighters) of its own, plus 12 small craft. The Fed-Com Potemkin also can carry 45 Battlearmor troops and 2 companies of marines, and an 80-bed medical bay helps casualties recover.

The biggest gain has been in armor, with the Fed-Com Potemkin having almost double the armor of the original Star League (and subsequently Clan) versions. This helps insure that the Potemkin can outlast that which it cannot outrun.

Given the long time required to construct the Potemkin, plus the current situation within the Federated Commonwealth, it is doubtful that another one will begin construction soon.
